Pukekohe’s Taylor Cockerton has won the 2017 Formula Masters Series title at the fifth and final round held at the Shanghai International Circuit over the weekend.
Heading into the round with four races to compete, Cockerton was lying in second overall, 16 points behind rival and series leader Daniel Lu.
He anticipated that it may go down to the final race of the round and series and this was to eventuate with Cockerton having reduced the gap to just nine points with one race to go.
A prolonged safety car period saw Cockerton finish the opening race of the weekend in fourth, in which Lu won. A win in the second race saw the gap at 20 points with Lu finishing fourth.
The third race saw Cockerton win again and thus reducing the gap to just nine points. The final race with 20 points up for graps saw Cockerton not only finish with enough points to close the gap, but also with Lu down the field handing Cockerton the 2017 title.
