For the first time since 1992 a Mazda finished at the top of the New Zealand Rally Championship when Andrew Hawkeswood, driving his Mazda2 clinched the title with third place at Rally New Zealand.
Mazda New Zealand, Managing Director David Hodge, said it was an outstanding performance by Andrew who delivered consistent results to win what was one the closest championship since 2001.
“He has driven RX-7s and Mazda 323s in previous rally championships and it is fantastic to see that 20 years commitment to winning the NZ Rally Championship has been rewarded.
We are delighted to have supported him in his quest to win the title.
“It was great to see a Mazda2 win the title and continues the tradition of Mazda vehicles performing well in New Zealand rallies, including championship winners Neil Allport who raced a Mazda RX-7 and Mazda 323, David Ayling in a Mazda 323 and Rod Millen before them.
For Hawkeswood it was the culmination of many years of hard work and he is thrilled to achieve his goal of winning the title in the Mazda2.
“The AP4 class Mazda2 with its NZR 1800 turbo engine has performed great all year. Its high strength body and light weight make it ideal for New Zealand conditions. We are already building a Mazda2 for next year’s championship that will feature the SKYACTIV engine so I’m really looking forward to that.”
